James G. Sowards

MD, MMM, FACEP, FAAEM James G. Sowards

Dr. Sowards was born and raised in Columbus, OH. He attended Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI and earned a B.S. in health psychology in 1985. Subsequently he attended Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, CA and received his M.D. in 1989. Upon choosing emergency medicine for his career he completed his residency at L.A. County/King-Drew. He was named chief resident his final year and completed his training in 1992. He is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

His work experience includes several hospitals in southern California including San Bernardino Community Hospital and JFK Memorial hospital in Indio, CA. Upon returning to his home state of Ohio in 1994 he worked for nearly ten years at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, OH. In 2003 he moved to Peoria, IL where he lives today. In 2004 Dr. Sowards and Dr Elsburgh Clarke founded Comprehensive Emergency Solutions, a Peoria based emergency medicine group. Dr. Sowards is the president of the group and also serves as the medical director for the emergency department at UnityPoint Health-Methodist, in Peoria. Dr. Sowards furthered his education by earning a Masters in Medical Management degree from the University of Southern California in 2007.

Dr. Sowards believes that a locally managed, independently owned ED group is the superior structure for an ED group. By offering CES partners an ownership stake in the group, CES is able to recruit and retain quality physicians to further enhance the groups’ abilities and reputation. CES has consistently delivered high quality emergency care to the Peoria community and has driven the department’s patient satisfaction scores to near the highest in the Nation.

Dr. Sowards is married to Nancy and has three children Gabe, Savannah, and Elizabeth.
